Who We Are

In 1978 the Women’s Center-High Desert was started as a referral agency and organizer of “rap sessions” which dealt with women’s issues. The work done by a handful of dedicated volunteers in the seventies has evolved into an agency of staff and volunteers that provides a variety of services to women and men and their families. There is approximately 2,600 square miles in East Kern County and we know we are making a difference in the lives of those we serve.

Our funding sources include federal and state funds as well as local support through the United Way of the Indian Wells Valley, community service organizations, fundraisers and personal donations.

Those We Have Helped

From January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013 we provided crises intervention to 106 sexual assault victims and advocacy for 77 sexual assault cases. We provided crises intervention to 349 non duplicated domestic violence victims, assisted 363 victims with domestic violence restraining orders, made referrals to 1,338 clients for other services, provided safe shelter for 164 adults and children for a total of 7,733 safe bed nights. We provided services to 393 victims from law enforcement referrals, emergency transportation for 170 victims, counseling (both peer and clinician) for 276 victims, facilitated 32 community awareness presentations for 422 people, established 91 violence free households for some of our clients and provided 106 clients household assistance.

We Need Your Support

We count on your support to help these programs continue. Your donation may help support a relative neighbor, or friend that is living in silence. Won’t you please take time to fill out the membership form and help us continue to help those in desperate need? Return it by mail or drop it by the office and meet the staff. We will be glad to provide you with additional information. We encourage you to inquire about our many opportunities to volunteer.

The Women’s Center Board, Management, Staff and Volunteers would like to thank all who have so generously contributed time, energy and money to allow the work we do to continue.
